Yes, Thank You
from Out With Lanterns
On the way to the grocery store, I am alone in the car. It’s just a two mile drive, and I begin to weep. Indeterminate why. Does it matter why? Just a small tear-letting before selecting apples and avocadoes, thinking about my mother’s hands, my father’s laugh, and how so much time has passed, how we can’t know how much is left. How lucky are we to have loved so well? I’ve been practicing, with everything, repeating in my mind: “Yes, thank you.” The flight is canceled. Yes, Thank you. The show was a success. Yes, Thank you. The traffic made us late. Yes, Thank you. Life is finite. Yes, Thank you. You have known love. Yes, Thank you.

beautifully stated.
