Whispering Yes
from Out With Lanterns, a daily poetry practice
Mostly love is about noticing that the refrigerator is bare, that she cut her hair, that he doesn’t seem to be sleeping well. It’s about smiling when they walk in the door. After a while, love is about repair because damage will be done. Love requires us to believe in magic to listen to the still and small voice whispering which person to leave and which to never let go. Love is in the laundry and groceries and what’s that sticky spot on the floor and walking the dog and making the bed and returning again and again to the voice that whispered Yes.
