Three days until winter solstice, I revel in the blackness of night. I am actively wintering, horizontal under blankets, dogs warming my toes, cat asleep on the chair, fire in the fireplace, bread rising in the kitchen. It is not luxury to live according to earth’s guidance. It is simply what the body wants to do. When did we forget? These short days, we must shut down early, pull on soft sweaters, thick socks, slowly drop the book onto our chest, drift off, eyelids heavy, light dim. I honor winter, grateful for her quiet.

Beautiful. I have to savor the dark vicariously through you because I'm longing for summer already. But this resonates: When did we forget?
I love winter! It’s like it gives me permission to just hunker down. I love how it gets dark early so I get to shut down early.
