Pause
from Out With Lanterns, a daily poetry practice
There are times I want to hit pause, like when my nephew wept openly as he watched his bride walk down the aisle. Or when the dog was still a puppy and fell asleep in the wooden bowl, curled perfection. Or when I held my girls for the first time after waiting nine long months to meet the most important part of my body, now breathing outside of my body. Or that time we laughed so hard we fell over. And then there are times I wish the day would end, like tonight, as I whisper mercy into night rain.

This is why I read poetry. To feel that gasp.
Julie, your poems always soften me just enough to accept reality with grace
