Half a mile from my parents’ house, the lightning bugs started shining like a choreographed, glowing welcome. My daughter rolled down her window– warm summer air, silky with humidity. I rolled mine down too, turned up the volume. I watched her lean out, inhale deep, grin, sing along to her favorite Zach Bryan song– the one with frog as percussionist. I just want to remember that moment— how she seemed content in a way that made me good shiver. Summer night, magic bugs, coming home to another home, nostalgic already at seventeen.

To bear witness to those moments of contentment always take my breath away. It's like seeing your kid in their complete wholeness.
